Colwood is a wonderful place to live, work and play - we have so much potential and so many opportunties in this community. Judith's focus is on creating positive change, based on:
- In her first term, Judith worked to build strong and productive partnerships between the City of Colwood and community partners, including Royal Roads University, Parks Canada, BC Transit, and the WestShore Chamber of Commerce.
- The Solar Colwood program, led by Judith, has brought more than $4 million dollars in grant money to the city. This program is built on more than an dozen partnerships with government, academia and the private sectors, and was recognized with a Community Energy Award for Public Sector Collaboration at the 2011 Union of BC Municipalities meeting.
- We need to continue working with all sectors - including the arts community, developers and interested citizens - to make this an even better place to live.
Building a Strong Local Economy
- Now that Colwood's finances are on a stronger footing, and the problems of unreasonable sewer taxes are almost resolved, we need to move forward with creating a strong and diversified tax base.
- Judith is working to encourage more businesses to come to Colwood, and supporting more mixed use commercial-residential development that will place new jobs close to people.
- Judith is championing new jobs in the booming green economy sector. The Solar Colwood program is putting more than $2.6 million in the hands of Colwood homeowners and businesses, supporting local jobs for energy retrofits and clean energy technologies such as solar hot water heating - choices that will also lower ongoing energy costs.
Building a Sustainable Community
- Colwood's award-winning OCP leads the vision for a sustainable community.
- Some of the work of implementing the OCP has started, for example with the new developments at Colwood Corners and along Latoria Road. Council has legalised secondary suites to create affordable housing options, and worked with BC Transit to plan for future transit options.
- Judith will be working to expand the arts and culture opportunities in Colwood, including promoting a new cultural centre along with the new high school at Royal Bay. She will also promote an urban forest strategy that will set the foundation for a healthy urban forest in this community.
